Aviators Aircraft Set

FAQ

What is av8?
It is a vehicle set for TTDPatch and Open TTD. It replaces all the aircraft.

Why did you make it?
The default TTD aircraft are very boring. And I like making things.

Why did you model and render the sprites, rather than just drawing them like most other sets do?
Aircraft can be quite complex shapes. I also wanted to represent them at funny angles (climbing after take-off, flaring before landing, etc), and this is much easier to do with rendering.

How long did it take to make?
I made the first models - the A320 was the first - in March 2006, which was about 8 months before the v1 release.

Why isn't the [insert name of aircraft here] in the set?
Probably because there's already another aircraft in there with comparable stats, and there are only a limited number of slots. I wanted to include a wider variety of aircraft, particularly in the earlier years of the game, so many aircraft that were in the original TTD vehicle set had to be left out.

My planes are losing money! What gives?
As with my other graphics sets, I'm trying to avoid "biggest, fastest" syndrome, where players will always buy the biggest and fastest vehicle available. Aircraft in av8 are much closer to real life aircraft; they can make a lot of money, but they also cost a lot to buy and operate. If your aircraft are spending too much time on the ground or in queues, or are flying empty a lot, they will make a loss. Choose your aircraft carefully.

Would you like to give special thanks to Steven Hoefel for writing the patch code that allows aircraft to slow down before landing?
Why yes, yes I would. How did you know? Thanks must also go to the other patch devs for making all this possible, and to Dan MacKellar for suggestions and beta testing.
